Abstract

The measurement of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) in seawater is important within various scientific disciplines not only limited to chemical oceanography and marine carbon cycle research. Investigations in the field of ocean acidification also benefit from improved measuring technologies for CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). On the one hand, pCO2 is a meaningful stand-alone measuring parameter since it e.g. responds sensitively to biogeochemical processes such as photosynthesis and respiration. On the other hand it is a valuable variable within multi parameter measurements for the determination of the marine carbonate system. Throughout the last years we have developed, improved and assessed the quality of an autonomous underwater pCO2 sensor. Here we present the latest status of that work by discussing field data from various referenced deployments. Aspects covered will be i.a. accuracy, response time and power consumption. The sensor proved a good platform integratabilty and is recently used more often as part of carbonate system sensor suites. Future developments will be outlined.
