Abstract

This project in the framework of the world exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hannover is displayed in the new Norway Terminal in Kiel from June to October 2000. Here, the Workinggroup Marine Research (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Meeresforschung), consisting of seven institutes from the Christian-AIbrechts- University and non-university research institutions, will demonstrate the importance of the world oceans for the future of mankind and nature.
The oceans cover more than two thirds of the Earth's surface and their current systems determine the Earth's climate. The sea floor preserves the development of the continents and the climatic history of the Earth. The oceans are the biggest storage of energy, the habitat of the greatest species diversity, and an indispensable food source. The oceans are transport paths for the world economy. They contain gas and oil reservoirs as well as other resources of yet unknown extent.
The investigation of global changes in the oceans, marginal seas, and coastal areas in international, interdisciplinary cooperation is the greatest and most extensive German contribution to the investigation of the evironment, the living conditions of mankind and nature.
Discover the unemployed continent: The blue ocean. We dive through the water surface, the skin of the ocean, into the water, the body, and at the end of our trip we get to the sea floor, the memory of the ocean. The chapter skin refers to all research themes regarding the water surface and in the chapter body research themes around all processes in the water column are discussed.
The sediments of the sea floor, finally, are an archive of past centuries like a memory. This trip through the ocean shows important research fie lds of several marine science institutes in Kiel.
