Abstract

The tropical Ocean is an area of strong currents, which are strongly merged into a complicated current system. A variability is generated especially in the upper 100m of the water column, which are influencing the sea surface signature of the tropical Ocean. The aim of this work is the locally and temporal characterisation of the intraseasonal variabilities. By using satellite data of the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and the Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) a spatial analysis of the tropical Atlantic is created. The data is available for the last ten years. To draw conclusions about the vertical structure of the Equator, velocities out of the upper 700m of the water column are analysed. The data come from a mooring at the equator at 23°W and is available from 2004 to 2009. Intraseasonal variability appears at the northern hemisphere west of 10°W along 2°N-5°N in the SLA data. In the SST data the intrasaisonal variability are located from 0° to 28°W, and from the Equator up to 2°N. The high variability of the southern hemisphere lies, in opposition to the northern, at 10°W along 2°S and 5°S in SLA, as in SST it is from the Equator to 2°S. A wave pattern, that is induced by an instability of the zonal current system, is found in both, the SST and the SLA signature at west of 10°W It underlies periods of 15 to 50 days and is combined to the term Tropical Instability Wave (TIW). The area east of 10°W underlies the variability of the wind stress and periods of 15 days. These variabilities mostly occur in the boreal summer. This is combined with a weak signal in the winter month off the last few years. Furthermore the variability is subject to an intensity fluctuation over the years. In 2001 and 2002, for example, the variability in the SLA was strong, whereas in the last few years the signal became weaker.
