Abstract

The effect of the environmental factors on permafrost has been studied. Three main factors,
namely: the
air temperature, the accumulated amounts of solid precipitation, and the vegetation dynamics,
which govern the state of the frozen ground at time scales from few years to decades, are
identified. The quantitative evaluation of their effect on the soil temperature variations and the
construction of the conceptual model for predicting permafrost dynamics under the current and
expected for the future climatic conditions, which accounts for the
cumulative effect of major governing factors, have been carried out.
