Pamukkale(Hierapolis), well-known World Heritage Site with the huge amount of whitish travertine deposits, is located in the Denizli Graben (Turkey) where two parallel fault zones
(Pamukkale and Babadag) are intersected. As a natural consequence, several joints and
fractures cut Hierapolis that was hit by past earthquakes (Altunel and Hancock 1996). Many
historical buildings of Hierapolis were directly located on these joints and fracture zones. Two
sanctuaries, associated with the lineaments, are emitting geogenic gasses (Pfanz et al., 2014).
Instant CO2 measurements showed a range from % 0.1 to % 96, while continuous CO2 values changed in time and the height from the measurement points. Radon concentration mostly is parallel to the concentrations of geogenic CO2 which plays as a carrier gas for radon. Besides other gas species, the relatively high helium isotope ratio shows gas emissions takes place often along the fractures and faults as the extension of the Denizli Graben cutting its way through the ancient city.
