Abstract

AADI optodes typically measure blue light excitation phase differences. The phase difference is converted into a dissolved oxygen content by the application of a set of 20 sensing foil specific, temperature dependent, coefficients. These sensing foil specific coefficients are provided for each batch of foil by the foil manufacturer (PreSens, Regensburg, Germany). The foil is used to manufacture I don't how many optodes. To account for the specific
behaviour of each little piece of foil after it has been mounted in the optode, a further “correction” polynom (typically 1st order) is determined through a 0%/100% oxygen
saturation and temperature measurement. Some further corrections for pressure and salinity variations are applied to derive the final dissolved oxygen content. We used data from optodes mounted on a glider and on a number of floats launched in the Southeast Pacific oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) to test the calibration of the optodes. Such a test is possible because one can find regions in the OMZ with rather constant and known oxygen concentrations over a wide temperature, pressure and salinity range. Measurements
recorded in these regions can be used to recalibrate the optodes. In addition, pressure and salinity observations can also be introduced in the correction polynom
