Abstract

Fine-grained limestone, coarse-grained marble, fibrous quartzite, and fine- to medium-grained artifical rock salt has been deformed in a triaxial pressure apparatus. The experimental technique enables us to achieve not only axially symmetric states of stress but also general orthorhombic strains. Each rock type has been subjected to three different states of stress: to axial compression, to axial extension and to a general orthorhombic state. X-ray techniques were used to determine preferred orientation before and after deformation. Preferred orientation in the final fabric is strongly related to the stress system applied and to the fabric of the starting material. The symmetry of the final fabric is governed by the superposition principle. General remarks are made on the mechanisms of deformation comprising twinning, translation and recrystallization.
