Abstract

During the InGOS project (WP6) a series of platforms were deployed in different oceanic regions in order to improve the quality as well as the spatial and temporal coverage of nitrous oxide (N2O) measurements. A combination of time series station work and development and testing of new instrumentation for continuous measurements allowed us to expand the state of knowledge with regards to marine emissions of N2O. The results of high resolution surveys carried out on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans are presented and key regions of significant -and partly unaccounted for- N2O outgassing to the atmosphere are described in terms of the physical and biological setup that affects its distribution. Furthermore, results from N2O measurements at the Boknis Eck Site (54.5°N 10.0°E, https://www.bokniseck.de/home) are presented to illustrate the seasonal dynamics of this gas and its sensitivity to the naturally occurring variability of oxygen concentrations.
