Abstract
The aim of this bachelor thesis was the measurement of water samples from the Meteor cruise M91 (1.12.12 – 26.12.12) and the investigation of possible connections between dimethylsulfide (DMS), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). In the timelimit of the bachelor thesis a third of all samples could be measured and analysed. The upwelling off the peruvian coast leads to strong production of phytoplankton, which is interesting for research of plankton pruduced DMSO/DMSP. The compounds and their connections with the DMS production, as well as a possible influence on the climate are poorly understood. The measured maximum values are 6,75 nmol L-1 (DMS, Median 2,06), 131 nmol L-1 (DMSOp, Median 34,32) und 289 nmol L-1 (DMSPp, Median 103,96). The maximum values appeared close to
the surface (10-20 m) and dropped to their minimum in a depth of ca. 100 m. In deeper regions the concentrations remained nearly constant. A scatterplot of the DMSOp concentration against the chlorophyll a concentration showed a strong connection between these two, which lead to the assumption that the planktonspecies are specialised in DMSO production. The measured depthprofiles showed that DMSO and DMSP concentrations drop with the oxygen concentration.
