Abstract

The scientific objectives focussed on redox-dependent nutrient and nitrogen cycles in the benthic boundary layer of the suboxic to anoxic Gotland Basin. We aimed to study release rates and inventories of nutrients and nitrogen compounds under varying degrees of bottom water oxygenation. Another goal was to quantify source/sink mechanisms of the benthic boundary layer for nitrogen species and nutrients under changing oxygen conditions to assess potential feedbacks on the upper mixed layer processes.
The technological objectives were to test two newly designed benthic mesocosms (benthic chambers) which are deployed on the seafloor with a GEOMAR Modular Lander.
In order to obtain these goal, we monitored the water column, sampled surface sediments and deployed a lander along a transect from oxygenated to suboxic and anoxic benthic boundary layer conditions.
The cruise started and ended in Kiel (Germany) and led directly to the Gotland Basin. Station work was carried out between 57?15?N and 57? 30?N on a transect from the Latvijan EEZ beyond the 50m depth contour through the deepest part of the Gotland Basin (220m) to the Swedish EEZ beyond the 100m depth contour.
