Abstract
Two cores recovered in the Greenland Sea contain aggregates (up to 5 cm in diameter) of poorly sorted coarse-grained material. Their lithologic and biogenic content, in addition to the grain size and grain shape, indicate that they are related to till balls. It is possible that they formed in a fluvial or nearshore environment (perhaps in Greenland or Siberia), were frozen into fast ice, and were then transported by sea ice-rafting to their present location. Since the balls were still partly frozen, they could survive the 2000 m drop through the water column to the seafloor.
