Abstract
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a key atmospheric trace gas the major stratospheric ozone-depleting compound. The ocean releases one third of the total natural emissions of N2O to the atmosphere and yet its emission estimates are highly uncertain due to the paucity of measurements in key regions, in particular coastal systems. Likewise, there is a lack of measurement platforms to resolve the long-term variability of the distribution and sea-air fluxes of N2O, which constraints the prediction of its future emission trends. Great progress in improving measurement methods for this gas has been achieved over the last decade, with increasing number of groups using high-resolution optical methods such as cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS) and off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) coupled to custom equilibration setups. However, in order to fill in observational gaps and to acquire a glimpse of the long-term distributions of the emissions of N2O from the marine environment, a coordinated effort with new platforms and techniques is required. In this poster presentation I briefly review the current advances in N2O measurements over the last decade and discuss potential options for integrating N2O to the major observation systems wordlwide, such that better (highly accurate), faster (highly resolved) and more clean (less chemical and plastic waste) measurements can be obtained and made available to the scientific community.
