Abstract

Healthy and diseased individuals of several coastal fish species have been exposed to different concentrations for 24 hours in a flow-through system. The values for LC50 were: cod infestated with the gill parasite Lernaeocera branchialis (Copepoda) 4.2mg 02/l, parasite-free cod 3.5mg 02/l, flounder with more than 100 juvenile L. branchialis 1.7mg 02/l, respectively. Between July and October 1985 catches from a commercial anchor net in the lower Elbe River between Brunsbüttel and Hamburg have been studied. Unusual high catches could be related to an avoidance reaction of fish to oxygen deficient water. Total catch (98%) of smelt occured down to 3.5mg 02/l, of pike-perch and flounder down to 2.5mg 02/l. Side arms of the Elbe River were shown to be hiding areas during periods of oxygen deficientcy in the main stream.
