Abstract

The Seine estuary, located on the northern coast of France, is underlies strong macrotidal effects of the English Channel. Previous workers have demonstrated the formation of so called "macroflocs", aggregates of particles and sedimentary debris, in predominantly marine (i.e. saline) environments. Having used a new video observation system for surface measurements, this study provides evidence for the occurrence of macroflocs in the freshwater environment of the Seine estuary. The amount of suspended particles as well as the floc size distribution correspond directly to variations in tidal currents in the study area. Enhanced contents in organic matter are found to correlate positively with the rigidity of macroflocs.
