Abstract

Research dealing with faunistic-ecological marine biological problems needs to be completed by physiological experiments and observations in the laboratory. Only by this way we can completely analyse and understand what happens in the sea and why. Only in the laboratory we can study the effect on marine forms of specific external conditions when one factor is altered. Laboratory experiments, especially in cultivation, using simple and mixed cultures, give information about the genetic and individual potentials of the marine forms. Also on research ships it ought to be possible to examine freshly caught organisms physiologically. The floating laboratories ought therefore to have all equipment necessary for keeping and analysing living marine organisms at various salinities, temperatures and water pressures.
