Abstract

Dusty old rocks…. once collected with a project-related focus, they are now waiting for re-discovery and re-use. Time to re-visit the material and to incorporate it into your new project ideas. Consider possibilites such as easy-access for a pre-project study or for developing new analytical methods.
The GEOMAR Rock repository houses a collection of over 5000 rock specimen collected from the seafloor around the world. The majority are volcanic rocks from mid ocean ridges, seamounts and oceanic plateaus. In addition, volcaniclastic rocks, manganese nodules, sulfides and related rocks as well as sediments, carbonates and plutonic rocks are hosted in our collection.
The current infrastructure of the repository offers a map-based overview (ArcGIS):

Here, all curated material is included, i.e. where all metadata is available and checked for consistency. More is going to be added to the database, when refurbishing the older collections.
For access to the rocks and for more information, contact the curator (geosamples@geomar.de) For academic use, it is free of charge, just be aware of moratorium period for freshly collected rocks.
Dusty old rocks… to be thrown into the melting pot when discussing the future of oceanic volcanism.
