Abstract

The scientific program of the RV METEOR M184 expedition was dedicated to studies on high
latitude water mass transformation, hydrographic variability, and submesoscale processes
associated with oceanic frontal regions in the Labrador Sea and the Irminger Basin. Measurements
of the vertical structure of temperature, salinity, density, oxygen, nutrients, optical properties and
the flow were performed at selected stations along sections using the Conductivity, Temperature,
Depth (CTD) sonde and the rosette sampler. Close to the surface, permanent registrations have
been carried out using a thermosalinograph (temperature, salinity), with meteorological sensors,
and water currents were measurements down to 1000m depth using the Acoustic Doppler Current
Profiler (ADCP). For the submesoscale frontal surveys autonomous underwater electric gliders
and ship mounted gear was deployed. The expedition was a contribution to international programs
and projects (OSNAP, EU projects EuroSea and GROOM II).
