Abstract

Due to global climate change the environmental conditions are changed. For instance there are changes in temperature and the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Depending on the strength of these stressors the organisms are influenced differently. Therefore it is necessary to review the effects of these changes by means of important key organisms. As the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus is a significant primary producer in the Baltic Sea, it is a suitable organism for the utilization in experimental studies. Since especially young macroalgae are vulnerable to stress, these stages were used in different treatments. The used germlings were analysed by looking at changes in growth and photosynthesis. To evaluate the growth the area was measured and in addition the mortality was determined. For comparison of the efficiency of photosynthesis in the different treatments several parameters were also measured: non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), effective quantum yield (F’v/F’m) & parameters of the relative electron transport rate like maximum photosynthetic rate, the light saturation point, the initial slope and the photoinhibition coefficient. The results showed an increased growth when temperature and CO2 concentration were enhanced. After longer treatment the survival was also positively influenced by CO2. There were nearly no effects regarding photosynthesis. However the germlings were exposed to more Photoinhibition after higher temperature. Current stress due to temperature can be compensated by distribution of heat. In total early life stages of Fucus vesiculosus were susceptible to stress and the mortality was high. Though the development of new germlings was supported by higher temperature.
