Abstract

Software architectures describe how components and connectors are arranged in software systems. Today many of software systems share common characteristics and, therefore, their architectures share common characteristics. On that basis architectural styles can be defined. In research several abstract styles have been identified. However, modern frameworks implementing these styles induce additional constraints to these styles. When migrating a software system based on a architectural style and a specific set of technologies which might be outdated to another set of technologies, the best set of technologies and archtectural styles must be deterimined. In this thesis we present an ontology based approach supporting the selection of a techology based architrctural style for such migration effort. The approach comprises a basic set of ontology classes an relationships, a method to add data to that ontology to represent different technologies and archtectural styles, and a method to query these ontology to provide answers to the style selection.
